Did you know?
The high-wheel bicycle, designed in 1869, was the first invention to be called a ‘bicycle’. Since only one gear was used, the only way to make the bicycle faster was to increase the size of the wheel. The high-wheel bicycle was popular for around 20 years before becoming obsolete when chain-driven bicycles gained popularity.
This bicycle is also known as penny-farthing, high wheeler and ordinary bicycle.
