Although Thomas A. Edison is credited for inventing the electric light in 1879, some historians claim there were over 20 inventors of incandescent lamps prior to Edison. Edison is only the first one to produce an economically viable bulb. The incandescent light bulb uses 90% of energy to produce heat and a very low 10% to produce the actual light. Today, several countries have taken measures to phase out incandescent light bulbs and use better energy-efficient alternatives.
